How carbon-neutral hotel bookings actually work
A plain-English explainer. No greenwash, no invented numbers, no monthly fee — just the actual mechanic.
The numbers we use
IMPT retires one tonne of UN-verified CO₂ credits per booking. That is roughly 28 times the average per-night footprint of a hotel stay. The credit is retired on-chain on Ethereum, with a public receipt that can never be double-counted.
We do not invent unit economics that change between marketing surfaces. The numbers above are the only carbon numbers we publish. If you see a different number elsewhere on an IMPT site, the page on this site is correct.
Where the money comes from
When you book a hotel through IMPT, the hotel pays IMPT a commission — the same commission they would pay any other major travel site. IMPT uses part of that commission to buy and retire the carbon credit. The guest pays the standard rate the hotel publishes. There is no carbon surcharge and no separate fee.
What "UN-verified" means
The credits are issued by projects registered under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). They go through third-party verification before issuance and are tracked under a serialised registry — which is what allows the on-chain retirement to be tied to a specific real-world project.
Why we record the retirement on Ethereum
On-chain retirement gives every booking a public, non-tamperable record. The same credit can never be sold or counted twice — a chronic problem in the off-chain offset market. Anyone can verify the retirement by looking up the on-chain receipt against the booking ID.
What we do NOT claim
- We do not claim individual hotels are "green-certified". They are standard hotels — what makes the booking carbon-neutral is the offset, not a property certification.
- We do not claim the offset cancels every emission of your trip. It covers a tonne of CO₂ — far more than the per-night hotel footprint, but not the flight to get there.
- We do not invent monthly subscription fees, loyalty caps, or cashback rates that don't exist on the live product. If you see a number on this site, it's because the live product confirms it.
Where to start
Pick an Irish city from the Ireland directory or search live availability on app.impt.io. Same price as direct. The carbon offset happens automatically — you do nothing extra.
